Boron
Functions
Boron is essential for certain animals. Its essentiality for humans is under investigation, with some research suggesting that boron may be essential. Some research has shown that boron depletion may increase the urinary losses of calcium and magnesium and cause a decrease in certain hormones e.g. testosterone and 17b-oestradiol.
Recommended Intakes
There is no recommended intake for boron.
Food Sources
The richest sources of boron are plant foods e.g. fruits, leafy green vegetables, nuts, legumes.
Average daily intakes of boron range from 0.5mg-3.1mg/day.
Deficiency
During boron depletion, increases in urinary calcium and magnesium excretion have been noted. Also decreases in blood levels of the hormones testosterone and 17b-oestradiol have been noted. These changes could potentially have a negative impact on bone density
Toxicity It seems that when administered orally, the toxicity of boron is low. |
